Are You Able to Crack This? The Forgotten Netherlands Creation Which Forged the Modern World
One can find numerous candidates for the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
As per a new book, though, that title belongs to the automated timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, building a simple trading ship necessitated approximately ten sawyers laboring for 90 days,” notes the author. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical amount of cut lumber could be produced within seven days.”
Owing to their rapid mechanical saw, which converted timber to boards using almost no human effort, the Dutch could construct ships faster compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Netherlands naval, economic and artistic supremacy across Europe and the world.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Machine
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends Dávila, was “humanity’s initial authentic factory machine.” A wind turbine turned a gear. A single part transformed its circular movement into vertical motion to power the saw. A separate mechanism changed the spinning movement into a lateral movement feeding the timber to the blade. A geared mechanism moved the log forward a measured step each cycle.
“Each element seemed modest by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to combine them in order that they operated in a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing on every descending stroke while advancing on every return motion. It was a remarkably intelligent application of fundamental parts.”
