India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Haze After Diwali

On Tuesday morning residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered exposed to severely hazardous air that was classified as the "alarming" range.

Extremely High Pollution Measurements

Multiple areas of the capital showed an AQI exceeding 500, which translates to 10x the healthy level established by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, amounting to 15 to 20 times higher than safe limits.

Fireworks Ban and Current Policy Shifts

Since 2020, the government had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the deadly pollution that covers the capital as winter begins.

Nevertheless recently, the current city leadership appealed to the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a balance between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Legal Decision and Reality

Despite concerns of public health and environmental advocates, the court approved the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be ignited during limited periods throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Several monitoring devices throughout Delhi recorded pollution spiking around the night hours to extremely hazardous readings recorded during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Implications

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region pointing to deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles originating in India following the celebrations.

Persistent Pollution Issue

The dangerously high levels of atmospheric toxins in the capital have continued as a major issue for more than 15 years, with the situation continuing to worsen.

Near celebratory seasons, the levels of dangerous particles in the environment has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the worst records ever measured in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.

Multiple Pollution Contributors

The situation in Delhi is resulting from a combination of various sources including transportation pollution, dust, building projects, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent states of neighboring agricultural zones.

Within these states, agricultural workers regularly set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, producing dangerous haze that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million people living in the Delhi area is significant, according to various investigations.

This pollution causes increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can result in oncological diseases.

The pollution is estimated to be accounting for ten thousand premature deaths annually in the city.
