A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
