Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the flight.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the mission, such as spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
